On Sunday evening, Mainz and Freiburg go head-to-head at the MEWA Arena as both teams look to boost their European hopes in the Bundesliga.
Mainz form guideBo Svensson’s team has put themselves back in the race for the European spots of late with some excellent form. The O5ers are unbeaten in their last five games in the Bundesliga. A 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin last time out ended a four-game winning run in the German top flight.
The recent good results have moved Mainz up to seventh place, four points adrift of sixth-place Eintracht Frankfurt, who occupy the final European spot in the Bundesliga.
Mainz has an excellent recent home record in the German top flight, as they have won their last four league games at the MEWA Arena.
Freiburg form guideThe visitors exited the Europa League on Thursday after a 2-0 defeat against Italian giants Juventus. The loss means that Freiburg has now won just once in their last five games in all competitions.
However, Christian Streich’s team is unbeaten in their last five matches in the Bundesliga, having recorded three wins and two draws.
Their unbeaten run has kept Freiburg fighting for a Champions League spot. The team from the Black Forest is only outside the Champions League spots courtesy of an inferior goal difference to RB Leipzig and Union Berlin.
Freiburg has taken four points from their last two away games in the Bundesliga. However, they have also won just one of their previous five matches on their travels in the German top flight.
Latest team newsMainz looks set to be without highly-rated young striker Jonathan Burkardt due to a knee injury, while Marlon Mustapha could miss out through injury. Freiburg will once again be missing Daniel Kofi-Kyereh because of a knee problem. What am I backing?
Mainz is strong on home soil and has been in good form. I am backing Svensson’s team to record a win to boost their European hopes.
