On Saturday afternoon, in form German champions Bayern Munich hosts struggling Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena as both teams search for potentially vital points at opposite ends of the Bundesliga table.
Bayern Munich form guideThe German champions were held to a 0-0 midweek draw against Copenhagen in the Champions League. In truth, the game was a dead rubber for the Bavarians, who had already sealed their last-16 spot in Europe’s elite competition.
However, the draw will do little to deter Bayern in the Bundesliga, as Thomas Tuchel’s team has recorded six straight league wins after a 1-0 win at Koln last time out in the German top-flight.
The game ended a prolific scoring run for Bayern, as they had scored at least two goals in their previous 12 outings in the Bundesliga.
The reigning champions are also unbeaten in six home games in the Bundesliga, recording five wins and one draw in the run while also scoring at least two goals in eight of their previous nine league outings at the Allianz Arena.
Union Berlin form guideUnion interim head coach Marco Grote has overseen two 1-1 draws against Augsburg and Sporting Braga since replacing Urs Fischer on a temporary basis.
The weekend draw against Augsburg means that Union are winless in their previous ten games in the Bundesliga. However, the game at least ended a nine-match losing streak for the visitors in the German top-flight.
Unsurprisingly, considering their recent results, Union are in the Bundesliga relegation zone. However, they are only two points adrift of 15th place Darmstadt in the table and a point shy of Mainz, who occupy the relegation play-off spot.
The boys from Berlin have been poor travellers of late, as they have lost seven of their last eight away games in the Bundesliga while also suffering five straight league defeats on the road.
What am I backing?Bayern Munich’s recent league form has been ominous, and I can’t see anything other than a comfortable Bayern victory.
