The EFL Trophy hits the knockout round this week and we've got two ties on Wednesday evening to round things off. This game is one of them, a bit of a local game, with League One Wigan taking on League Two leaders Stockport, in what should be an entertaining clash.
Wigan Form GuideAdd back on the eight points Wigan had taken off at the start of the season and they are up in 9th position, three points away from the playoffs, so they're going much better than the current position they have, just below mid table. They come here playing some of their best football of the season, they are seven games unbeaten, with four wins and three draws in that period.
At the weekend, they went away at York City of the National League and won 1-0 in the FA Cup, in their last league game, they won 3-0 at home to Fleetwood Town. This is a team going places, and I don't think they'll see themselves as out of the playoff race just yet.
Stockport County Form GuideAfter going well last season, the aim this season for Stockport was to once again challenge for promotion, despite League Two looking to have taken a step up in quality. So far, it's fair to say they are ticking all the boxes, they are top of the league with 42 points, five ahead of Wrexham in second.
But they do come here on the back of a bumpy run, where they've not been at their best. They have failed to win any of their last three games. Most recently, they drew with non-league Aldershot in the FA Cup, 2-2 on Saturday. Before that, they drew at home to Salford and lost away at Newport, both in the league.
Match PredictionI am going to side with Wigan to win this game. They are going well in League One, playing perhaps the best they have all season, while Stockport are having a small blip in form, I think it's a good time to play them, and expect Wigan to win.
