UEFA Euro 2024 will take place next summer and the road to qualifying for that tournament continues this week with the latest international break. As clubs across the continent hit the pause button on their domestic leagues, plenty of countries will be hoping to edge closer to the finals. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun encounter between Luxembourg and Slovakia.
Luxembourg Form GuideLuxembourg is known as the nation with the most qualifying campaigns for the World Cup and Euros without ever actually reaching the final tournament. While many expect that trend to continue, there certainly seems to be a self belief in this particular squad that could do wonders for them. They’re looking stronger than they ever have, and you never know how far they could take it.
Following on from big wins over Liechtenstein, Bosnia and Iceland, Luxembourg came up short in a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Portugal. They did, however, earn a point against Iceland in their reverse fixture, which was a solid enough result in its own right.
Slovakia Form GuideSlovakia haven’t exactly blown many teams away on the big stage, but they’re pretty consistent when it comes to raising an eyebrow with qualification. The last decade or so has been their best run for that and although they seem to be moving something of a transition period, they have the ability to spring a surprise - even though their inconsistency has harmed them time and time again.
Following on from three straight wins over Bosnia, Iceland and Liechtenstein, Slovakia slipped to two defeats in three games - both against Portugal. They did, however, beat Liechtenstein once again, ensuring they’re still on the right path in the group.
Match PredictionThis is a really significant game in the race to qualify and it feels like Luxembourg know that if they’re going to really seize this opportunity, a win here is essential. We believe the most likely outcome is over 2.5 goals scored, because you just know Slovakia won’t go away quietly.
