We’re entering the final stages of the Ligue 1 season as teams up and down French football’s top flight attempt to finish the campaign off strong. It’s been a rollercoaster ride up to this point and over the course of the next few weeks, we expect to see more of the same across the nation. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the upcoming encounter between Nantes and Rennes.
Nantes Form GuideIt came down to the wire, but Nantes just about managed to stay in Ligue One last season and avoid relegation - just a few weeks after they received a battering in the French Cup final. They have a few talented players at their disposal and they look a far better team this time around, but there’s always the risk of them losing confidence and going on a major skid again.
Following losses to Metz, Marseille and Strasbourg, Nantes got back on track with a 2-1 victory against Nice. They did proceed to lose 3-1 to Lyon, but in their most recent outing, they got back to winning ways with a 1-0 success away to Le Havre.
Rennes Form GuideA strong end to the campaign ensured that Rennes finished in the top four last season, and that’s exactly what they deserved. They continue to build as a club to the point where it’s hard not to take them seriously at this level. They’re fun to watch, they have an incredible fanbase, and they have a squad that is capable of beating just about anyone in the league.
After a 2-2 draw with Lille, Rennes proceeded to defeat Marseille 2-0 - but since then, it’s been all downhill for their league and cup aspirations. They have subsequently lost four straight games to Strasbourg, PSG, Monaco and, most recently, Toulouse.
Match PredictionNantes aren’t entirely out of the woods yet in the relegation scrap whereas Rennes are seemingly just waiting for the season to come to an end. This is going to be a scrappy game, in our view, and that leads us to believe the most likely outcome is a draw.
