French football’s top tier is back this week as we prepare for another set of electric Ligue One fixtures. We’re entering the month of February and while that may mean we’re still in the midst of the winter blues, the action on the pitch gives us plenty of cause for excitement. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun clash between Nantes and Lens.
Nantes Form GuideIt came down to the wire, but Nantes just about managed to stay in Ligue One last season and avoid relegation - just a few weeks after they received a battering in the French Cup final. They have a few talented players at their disposal and they look a far better team this time around, but there’s always the risk of them losing confidence and going on a major skid again.
After being knocked out of the cup by Stade Laval, Nantes needed to get back on track against Reims. Alas, they didn’t really come forward with anything too special, and the game eventually fizzled out to a 0-0 draw on Sunday.
Lens Form GuideLast season, Lens truly did push PSG every step of the way in the title race and that’s a huge credit to how much hard work they’ve been putting in as a club in recent years. They were just one point away from springing an upset and for them, that’s a big takeaway. Now, though, they need to re-focus, because they’re certainly good enough to push for Europe again.
Lens’ clash with Toulouse was a rollercoaster of a clash as both sides came forward with real intent on Sunday. Alas, courtesy of goals either side of half time, Lens were able to pick up the kind of win that should help to restore some confidence within the club.
Match PredictionWhile we do think Nantes have a lot of quality and potential when they’re playing at their very best, it just seems as if they’ve taken a step back as of late. The visitors, meanwhile, are beginning to get back into a position of power, which is why we’re backing a Lens win.
