Ligue One football is back this weekend with another full slate of fixtures from one of the most underrated top flights in Europe. There are clubs up and down France’s top tier that will feel like they have a real point to prove as we continue on through the end of October. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be an entertaining clash between Marseille and Lyon.
Marseille Form GuideThey may have fallen away in the title race last season, but Marseille still serve as one of the biggest clubs in French football. They have a tremendous fanbase, they have an exciting squad full of real potential, and they come across as a team with ambition. Alas, all of that will be left redundant unless they can make everything click behind the scenes - and with their management.
After notable defeats to PSG and Monaco, Marseille were disappointed to only come away with a 2-2 draw from their clash with Brighton. They’ve since been able to defeat Le Havre and AEK Athens, but they also slipped to a 1-0 defeat away at high-flying Nice.
Lyon Form GuideAfter years of being seen as one of the ‘big dogs’ of French football, that’s no longer the case for Lyon. Instead, there are far more questions than answers, and there’s no real allure surrounding them as a club. Instead, there’s a great deal of uncertainty, with their squad not really being up to scratch - especially within the context of the elite teams they are usually competing with.
Following a humbling 4-1 defeat to PSG, Lyon only managed a 0-0 draw at home to Le Havre. From there, they were beaten by Brest and Reims, before getting back on track with a 3-3 draw at home to Lorient - only to lose to Clermont last weekend.
Match PredictionThe pressure is going to be on Marseille to really perform in this one and although we do think they’ll end up getting the win, that isn’t our primary prediction. Lyon will want to keep it as tight as they can at the back, with the end result likely being under 2.5 goals scored.
