Major League Soccer returns this weekend with a full slate of fixtures as we dive into yet another set of high profile clashes. We’re still in the early stages of the campaign but we’re starting to get a feel for how a few teams are approaching the season, even though there’s still a long way to go. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun game between Columbus Crew and DC United.
Columbus Form GuideLast season, Columbus Crew once again proved why they’re one of the most revered franchises in all of Major League Soccer. Following a late run that saw them finish third in the Eastern Conference, the Crew managed to go deep into the playoffs, finishing off their run with an unforgettable triumph over Los Angeles FC in the MLS Cup final.
Columbus’ solo loss so far this season was a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Charlotte. Outside of that, though, they’ve done fairly well. They did draw with Minnesota and Nashville, but they’ve also picked up morale-boosting wins over Atlanta, Chicago and NY Red Bulls.
DC Form GuideDC United can mix it up with the very best in the league one week, and then the next, fall short at home to one of the weaker sides. It really is a rollercoaster following their journey in the East, especially when you consider how much quality there is in some of the sides around them. For the 2024 campaign, we’re intrigued to see if they can be a bit more consistent.
Following a 3-1 win over New England, DC picked up a point in draws with Portland and Cincinnati. They did go on to lose 3-1 to Miami, but soon got back on their feet with a 2-2 draw against St Louis and a 1-0 win over Montreal at home.
Match PredictionThese two sides are both interesting to watch in their own right but in terms of overall quality, it does feel like there’s a slight gap between them. We’re expecting to see the kind of encounter that feels trepidatious at times but ultimately, the result we’re going to end up with is a Columbus win.
