The UEFA Champions League is back in our lives this week as we get ready for the group stage of the competition. Thirty-two of the biggest and best clubs from across Europe will come together in an attempt to make their push for a place in next year’s final in London. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun encounter between AC Milan and Newcastle United.

After losing their crown in 2022, Young Boys came straight back the next year and recaptured the Swiss Super League title. Now, they find themselves in the Champions League group stage, which is a real statement of intent and a sign of just how far they’ve come. In the group they’ve been drawn into, we’d argue they shouldn’t have anything to fear, either.

Following a 5-2 win over Winterthur and a 1-1 draw away at Luzern, Young Boys came up against Maccabi Haifa in the playoffs. After a 0-0 first leg draw, they battered Haifa 3-0 in the second leg, before returning to league action with a calm 1-0 win away at Servette.

In the eyes of many football fans who dislike franchise clubs, RB Leipzig aren’t a team that we should focus on too much. In equal measure, their success over the course of the last decade can’t be understated or ignored. They are now regulars in this competition and while they may not go all the way, they certainly have the talent necessary to cause some problems in the group and beyond.

After demolishing Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup, Leipzig fell to a disappointing 3-2 loss courtesy of Leverkusen. Since then, though, they’ve been unstoppable with three dominant wins over Stuttgart (5-1), Union Berlin (3-0), and Augsburg (3-0).

Young Boys are the kind of team who will put up a real scrap and you’ve got to respect that about their game, even if they’re lacking the necessary fundamentals to really compete. This one will come down to overall class and because of that, we’re going to favour a Leipzig win.
