Grimsby vs Luton Prediction (07.02.2023)

Grimsby Town will welcome Luton Town to Lincolnshire this week in an FA Cup fourth round replay.

After becoming something of a yo-yo club between the Football League and National League, Grimsby Town finally seem to be steadying themselves. They look like much more of a well-drilled unit than they once did and when you combine a cup run like this with consistency in League Two, they have the potential to make this a very special season.

Grimsby started the new year in style with back to back wins over Stockport and Burton in less than a week. They suffered a shock 5-0 loss to Swindon before being held by Luton in the cup, but over the weekend, they returned to form with a 3-0 triumph over Crewe.

A few years back, Luton Town fans wouldn’t have thought a campaign like this one would’ve been positive. Alas, they’re in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League, and rightly so. They possess a fantastic squad combined with a fanbase that is ready for more from this club, which should line them up for a memorable couple of months.

The games just keep on coming for the Hatters. After being beaten 3-2 by West Brom at home, they’ve since gone on a nice five-game unbeaten run. They beat Wigan in the cup and league within four days, drew with Grimsby, and then proceeded to beat Cardiff and Stoke 1-0.

McAtee will once again be unable to feature given that he’s on loan from Luton. Elsewhere, Lloyd and O’Neill are both going to be cup tied here.

Lansbury, Freeman and Bradley are all injured and will miss the trip to Lancashire with Taylor, Drameh, Walton and Nakamba all being either cup tied or unavailable.

If the first game was any indication, then this tie is going to come to an end with a real bang. Luton obviously have more quality but the onus is on Grimsby to make this a physical encounter. Regardless of which way it goes, we’re backing over 2.5 goals.
