Following a month of domestic action across the continent to kickstart the new season, it’s time for the first international break of the campaign. It’s full steam ahead to UEFA Euro 2024 next summer but until then, we have to figure out who will be there. Today, we’ll be taking a look at this week’s qualifier between Greece and Gibraltar.
Greece Form GuideEveryone remembers Greece for their famous triumph back at Euro 2004 and now, 20 years later, they seem ready and prepared to try and make another run to the big time. We don’t mean actually winning it, of course, because that would be an even bigger miracle than it was two decades ago, but qualifying is going to be a big target given that they haven’t managed it in their last two attempts.
Greece saw off the challenge of Gibraltar with a 3-0 win back in March before following it up with a 2-1 win over Ireland. Unfortunately, their next two games were against the big boys of the group, as they fell to defeats against France and the Netherlands.
Gibraltar Form GuideAs a national team that is barely a decade old, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Gibraltar are underdogs. It happens in just about every game they partake in and, really, so it should. They don’t really have the resources necessary to make this kind of operation work right now but in truth, it’s all about baby steps, which is why it’ll be exciting to see how things continue to develop.
Up to this point, Gibraltar have not scored in qualifying - and they aren’t exactly threatening to change that anytime soon. They’ve lost to Greece, Netherlands, France and Ireland, all by a 3-0 scoreline, in addition to a 1-0 friendly loss courtesy of Malta a few days back.
Match PredictionGibraltar have to keep things tight at the back, pick their moments on the counter, and hope for the best. Of course, it’s worth noting that the Greeks have a tendency to let things slip from time to time, which could add some extra intrigue to proceedings. With that being said, we’re still favouring a Greece win.
