Inconsistency certainly seemed to harm Cruz Azul last season when it came to figuring out what they were truly capable of. They’d win a couple games and then proceed to lose a couple, with many of the big names often outshining them. Now, though, in a competition such as this one, they’ve got the opportunity to make some noise and represent Mexico with real pride behind them.

Cruz Azul had the displeasure of coming up against the debuting Lionel Messi when they took on Inter Miami last weekend. They put up a really good fight, but ultimately, it didn’t matter much as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

Atlanta United, once upon a time, were a real force of nature upon initially entering the MLS. Unfortunately, they seem to have lost a bit of their spark in recent times. They’re still one of the most consistent acts in the East and they’re probably going to make it to the post-season, but we’re left to wonder what it is they can achieve in terms of making a deep run with this current squad as it stands.

As was the case for their opponents, Atlanta were tasked with facing Inter Miami and their new golden boy in the group stage. They didn’t even really come close to making an impact, as harsh as that may sound, as they were comfortably beaten 4-0.

ATL are struggling to keep their head above water in the play-off race and when it comes to this competition, it just feels like they had the wind well and truly knocked out of them in their first game. It may be competitive for the first 15-20 minutes before dwindling after that, leading to a Cruz Azul win.
