UEFA Euro 2024 will take place next summer and the road to qualifying for that tournament continues this week with the latest international break. As clubs across the continent hit the pause button on their domestic leagues, plenty of countries will be hoping to edge closer to the finals. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun encounter between Iceland and Liechtenstein.
Iceland Form GuideThat sensational 2016 Iceland side feels a long way away from where they are right now. They served as the ultimate underdog story and although many still look at them in that light, we’d argue that the shoe doesn’t really fit anymore. Perhaps if they can get back to the root of their initial style and capitalise on their chances like they used to, they could start to surge back into contention.
After battering Liechtenstein 7-0, Iceland slipped to three straight defeats against Slovakia, Portugal and Luxembourg. They rebounded with a narrow win over Bosnia, before only just about edging out a draw against Luxembourg a few days ago.
Liechtenstein Form GuideRight now, Liechtenstein are ranked 200th in the FIFA rankings, with just eight other nations on the planet being below them. If that didn’t make it obvious enough, this is a country that isn’t expected to do a whole lot on the international stage. They may get a slightly more positive result from time to time, but in the long run, they exist merely as warm bodies.
Liechtenstein, to the surprise of very few, have lost their last six games. They’ve been beaten by Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Bosnia, Slovakia again, and Bosnia again, scoring just one goal in that time.
Match PredictionIceland aren’t exactly the best team in Europe and they aren’t even close, but you’d have to imagine this is going to be a fairly comprehensive triumph for them. The visitors will have a few moments here and there, but an Iceland win is almost inevitable.
