On Monday evening, Senegal and the Netherlands go head-to-head in Group A of the World Cup as both teams look to make a winning start in Qatar.
Senegal form guideThe Lions of Teranga head into their third World Cup on the back of a slightly inconsistent recent run of form, as Senegal has won just two of their last five matches in all competitions in 90 minutes.
A 1-1 draw against Iran last time out was Senegal’s fourth straight game that had produced under 2.5 goals, which suggests that their games could be tight in Qatar.
Senegal’s record in the World Cup since their tournament debut in 2002 is a mixed one. However, the African nation has claimed just two wins in normal time in their eight games at the World Cup.
Netherlands form guideAfter failing to qualify for the last World Cup, the 2010 finalists will be keen to make a big impact in Qatar 2022. Louis van Gaal’s team is in good form going into the tournament, as they are unbeaten in 15 international games, having claimed a respectable 11 victories in the run.
The Netherlands certainly represents a potent attacking threat, as they have scored at least two goals in five of their last six internationals. The Oranje are also unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last 14 games at the World Cup, recording 11 wins and three draws.
However, one of those draws came in the competition's semi-final in 2014 against Argentina, which they lost in a penalty shootout. They also drew with Spain in normal time in the 2010 final, only to suffer a 1-0 defeat in extra time, courtesy of an Andres Iniesta strike.
What am I backing? The Netherlands are the favourites to come out on top in this clash, and I am also backing Van Gaal’s team to kick off their World Cup campaign with a victory.
