Odds Formats Explained

Before you start using the odds calculator, you need to know more information about the different formats. Fortunately, this article will give you everything you must be aware of regarding the most popular odds alternatives.

American odds

Also known as Money Line odds, this format is popular in the U.S., which is why people call it American odds. What sets this format apart from the rest is that the odds have a – or a + sign.

The first sign is given to the favourites, indicating how much money you must wager to win $100. On the other hand, the + is given to the underdogs, and it shows how much money you will win if you wager $100.

For example, if you bet on a soccer match where the odds for Team A are +200, you will win $200 in profits if you wager $100.

Decimal Odds

This is the most popular odds format in Europe, which means you will find it on almost any online bookie. What makes these odds so popular is that they are easy to understand.

Similar to the other format, Decimal odds have numbers. However, instead of showing how much you need to wager to win a given amount, they reveal how much you will win for every $1. In other words, it shows the total payout, not just the profit.

For example, if you wager $10 on the Full-Time Winner, where the odds are 2.00, and you win, you will get a total of $20 (10$ in winnings and $10 from your stake).

Fractional Odds

The fractional odds are also known as British odds because they are trendy in the UK and Ireland. Unlike the American format, this one uses a hyphen or a slash.

If you decide to use the fractional odds, you will know how much you will win for every $1 you wager.

For example, punting on the market with odds of 10/1 means you will get $10 in profit for every $1 you wager. Of course, you also need to add the amount you’ve bet, which means you will receive a total of $11.

Formulas

Aside from using the betting odds converter, you also need more information about the different formulas. Although it may seem complicated, once you learn how they work, you can convert the odds yourself. Speaking of converting the odds, here are the popular formulas you should know.

Converting Decimal to American and Fractional

You can convert decimal odds to fractional by doing the following: decimal odds – 1, and you will get the fractional ones. Also, you need to use 1 as the denominator.

Of course, you can also convert decimal to American. In this case, if the decimal odds are at least 2.00 or higher, you have to use the same formula as the one above (decimal -1), but in this case, you have to multiply it by 100.

If the decimal odds are in the range of 1.01 and 1.99, you have to do the following: -100 / (decimal odds -1).

Converting Fractional to American and Decimal

You can convert fractional to decimal odds by adding +1 to the numerator and denominator.

If you want to cover fractional to American odds, you have to use two different formulas. If the fractions are greater than 1, you must multiply them by 100. However, if they are lower than 1, you have to use this: -100 / (fractional odds).

Converting American to Decimal and Fractional

If you have access to positive American odds, you can convert them into a decimal by using this equation – American odds/100 + 1. However, if you use unfavourable odds, you need to use this: 1 – (100/ – the American odds).

You can also convert the American odds into fractional. For favourable odds, simply divide them by 100, and you will get the result. For negative ones, use this formula: -100 / – American odds.
