Both these countries are well-placed to make it into the knockout stages of Euro 2024 having enjoyed opening game victories. Neither won their respective game with any degree of comfort though. Turkiye were left desperately holding on against Georgia before Kerem Aktürkoğlu secured the victory. Portugal on the other hand only managed to find a winner against Czechia in second-half injury time following a fortuitous defensive error.
A young and gradually improving Turkiye side will have been pleased with their Georgia performance, but Portugal will need to offer more if they are to go far in this competition. The 2016 Champions are still one of the main contenders to lift the trophy in Germany, but this may change if they put in a couple more underwhelming group stage performances.

Turkiye Team News
As expected, İrfan Kahveci missed his country’s opening game of Euro 2024. The Fenerbahçe man only made it till half-time in his side’s final tournament warm-up match due to injury and has been undergoing treatment since. A return here is possible, but it is perhaps more likely that he will only be fit for Turkiye’s final group stage clash.
Kahveci’s club teammate, İsmail Yüksek, is the other Turkiye player dealing with a problem recently. Although he was spotted on the bench in the win over Georgia, he played no part in the game. This could indicate he was not quite 100% fit for the match, but he should be in contention for this one.
Portugal Team News
Roberto Martinez may have no injuries or suspensions to worry about, but he still has some big calls to make for this clash. The biggest one, by some distance, is whether or not to stick with Cristiano Ronaldo upfront after he put in a rather sluggish and wasteful performance against Czechia. We think it is unlikely the country’s all-time top goalscorer will be dropped after one poor showing, but the pressure is on the Al Nassr man to show up for this one.
Turkiye vs Portugal H2H Record and Key Numbers
Although Portugal and Turkey have only met nine times previously, this is their fourth clash in the finals of a European Championship. Portugal claimed victory in the previous three meetings in this competition and has a perfect record (six out of six) against Turkiye in competitive matches.
Date | Result | Competition |
24 Mar 2022 | Portugal 3-1 Turkiye | FIFA World Cup – Qualification Playoff |
02 Jun 2012 | Portugal 1-3 Turkiye | International Friendly |
07 Jun 2008 | Portugal 2-0 Turkiye | UEFA European Championship |
24 Jun 2000 | Portugal 2-0 Turkiye | UEFA European Championship |
14 Jun 1996 | Portugal 1-0 Turkiye | UEFA European Championship |
Portugal’s victory over Czechia on Tuesday was the first time the Seleção have won after conceding first since facing Ireland in September 2021. This says less about their resilience, though, than it does about their solid defence. Across Martinez’s 16 games in charge, Portugal have conceded just 11 goals. Turkiye, by contrast, has conceded this number in their last six matches.
Possible Lineups
- Turkiye (4-2-3-1): Günok – Müldür, Akaydin, Bardakcı, Kadıoğlu – Çalhanoğlu, Ayhan – Güler, Kökçü, Yıldız – Yılmaz
- Portugal (3-4-3): Costa – Dias, Pepe, Mendes – Dalot, Vitinha, Fernandes, Cancelo – Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo, Jota

Turkiye vs Portugal Match Prediction
Portugal were not at their best in their Euro 2024 opener but they will not need major improvements to see off Turkiye. This young Turkish side is heading in the right direction but there is a noticeable gap between them and the Seleção, who sit 34 places higher in the world rankings. To get anything against this Portugal side you need to defend well but we cannot see Turkiye being organised enough at the back. Based on this, I am opting for a 3-1 Portugal win here.
