Host nation Germany became the first side to book their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 when beating Hungary 2-0. This does not leave them without something to play for in their final group stage game though. Defeat to Switzerland would see them drop into second place, impacting who they would face in the last 16.

For Switzerland to remain in the top two places in Group A, all they realistically need to do is avoid a heavy defeat. The Swiss enjoy a +6 goal advantage over Scotland, who sit three points behind, so there would need to be a surprise result in both matches to see the Swiss drop to third.

Switzerland will be looking up, not down, though, and hoping to pinch Germany’s spot on top of Group A. Beating the host nation will not be easy, but Die Nationalmannschaft did show some vulnerabilities last time out.

Denis Zakaria and Steven Zuber had to watch another Switzerland match from the sidelines due to injury. There was some hope Zakaria could be ready in time to face Scotland, but his thigh injury is proving stubborn. With only a four-day turnaround between the Scotland game and the upcoming clash with Germany, both may again be unavailable.

The other concern for Switzerland surrounds Fabian Schär who broke his nose in the draw with Scotland. He managed to play the remaining 70 minutes of the match though and will likely be fine wearing a mask if called upon.

With Germany only needing a draw here, Julian Nagelsmann was asked if he was likely to rotate his side for this clash. The German manager did not rule out changes but stated, “There won’t be seven”. He will not be forced into any swaps by injury, as his squad is fully fit, but he may consider the yellow card situation.

Three of Germany’s back four, plus holding midfielder Robert Andrich, are one yellow card from a suspension. This may persuade Nagelsmann to hand a rest to one or two of Antonio Rudiger, Jonathan Tah and Maximilian Mittelstadt.

Switzerland vs Germany H2H Record and Key Numbers

This is a fixture Germany have generally dominated over the years. It has been more competitive of late though, with Switzerland ending a 55-year run without a win thanks to edging an eight-goal thriller in 2012. Curiously, this is the first time the two nations have met in a European Championship match (including qualifiers).

Switzerland did not qualify for Euro 2024 with a huge degree of comfort, but they were a team with just one defeat in their last 16 matches. Less impressively, they have failed to score more than once in seven of their last nine clashes. Germany, meanwhile, is picking up form at the right time after recording five wins from their last six matches.

Possible Lineups

  • Switzerland (3-4-3): Sommer – Schär, Akanji, Rodriguez – Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer – Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas
  • Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Tah, Mittelstädt – Can, Kroos – Musiala, Gündoğan, Wirtz – Füllkrug

Prediction

Switzerland are a tough side to beat, and I believe there will be evidence of this on Sunday. The Rossocrociati probably lack the firepower to cause Germany too many problems, but it is hard to see them losing this game by more than one goal. Although there is some appeal in backing a 1-1 draw, I am more tempted to pick a German side, likely resting a few names, to win 1-0.
