Spain progressed as winners of Group B with a 100% record after beating Italy, Croatia, and Albania without encountering too much fuss along the way. The Spanish scored five goals in their three group games without conceding, and that solid backline will be influential in their quest to make the semi-finals by beating the host nation before a huge audience in Stuttgart.

After making light work of the group, Spain met Georgia on Sunday in the last 16 and flexed their muscles with a stunning 4-1 win to progress. Despite conceding their first goal of the championships against Georgia, the victory was never in doubt as Spain played free-flowing and attacking football that left their opponents chasing shadows for much of the 90 minutes. They now face a much tougher opponent in Germany and must raise their game.

Spain have a concern surrounding Aymeric Laporte, who is suffering from muscle fatigue. He’ll get until the last possible minute to pass himself as fit, but Spain have Nacho Fernandez ready to step up if required.

Germany skipped qualifying as the host nation, but they hit the ground running at the competition proper when bringing the curtain up with an astounding 5-1 win over Scotland. The Germans exploded out of the traps and put that game to bed inside the opening 45 minutes, showing the gulf in class between the Germans and the Scots. It was the perfect foundation to launch their challenge.

Germany built on that easy win over Scotland with a victory over Hungary and a draw with Switzerland, which ensured they progressed to the knockout rounds as winners of Group A. The home team beat Denmark 2-0 in the last 16, thanks to goals from Havertz and Musiala. It wasn’t as impressive as Spain’s win in the same round, but the result matters more than the performance at this stage of play.

Germany enters this match with a clean bill of health, meaning the coaching staff have some difficult decisions to make, especially in defence.

Spain vs Germany H2H Record and Key Numbers

The head-to-head stats associated with this fixture show Spain and Germany have met 26 times previously, with Spain currently on eight wins, Germany on nine, and nine games ending in a draw. The most recent clash was in November 2022, when the nations served up a two-goal share.

Interestingly, three of the last four meetings have been draws with all three ending in a 1-1 full-time score. Will we see a repeat performance in this renewal? While a draw is likely, it’s also worth noting Germany hasn’t beaten Spain since 2014 with the Spanish enjoying a stunning 6-0 victory in that time.

Possible Lineups

  • Spain (4-3-3): Simon – Cucurella, Laporte, Normand, Carvajal – Ruiz, Rodri, Pedri – Williams, Morata, Yamal
  • Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Mittelstadt – Musiala, Andrich – Kroos, Gundogan, Wirtz – Havertz
