The penultimate game of Euro 2024 sees the Netherlands take on England in the second semi-final fixture. Both countries have experienced differing journeys to this late stage in the competition. The Three Lions have been defensively sound but so uninspiring in attack that question marks have been raised about boss Gareth Southgate. Only in one of their five matches so far has England won a match in 90 minutes due to their lack of goals.
The Dutch, meanwhile, have enjoyed some brighter moments this tournament and have found the net on nine occasions. They have been a little more vulnerable at the back, though, and thanks to this, we should have a finely balanced clash on our hands. England are the slight favourites coming into the contest, but do they have what it takes to book a second consecutive place in the final of this tournament?

Netherlands Team News
Ian Maatsen did not travel with the squad for the Oranje’s clash with Turkyie after being struck down by illness. He was spotted back in training on Sunday, though, indicating he will be available for selection again. Minutes seem unlikely for the Aston Villa man, though, as is yet to make a single appearance in Germany. Ronald Koeman does not need to dig deep into his reserves, as he has had very few injuries/suspensions during the tournament. Thanks to this, the former Everton boss can name what he believes is his strongest eleven for this tie.
England Team News
Koeman is not the only manager without any injured or suspended players for this clash, as Southgate also has a full squad available. Marc Guehi has served his one-game ban and will likely slot back into the defence, replacing Ezri Konsa. Luke Shaw got his first taste of Euro 2024 minutes after finally recovering from injury. The left-back enjoyed a 45-minute cameo against Switzerland and will surely be considered for a starting place now to provide some natural width.
Elsewhere, Jude Bellingham avoided any celebrations that might have triggered his suspended one-game ban, so there is no danger of him missing out.
Netherlands vs England H2H Record and Key Numbers
This has been a very competitive fixture over the years with nine of the 22 previous meetings ending up as draws. From the remaining 13 matches, the Netherlands narrowly edge it with seven wins versus England’s six.
Date | Result | Competition |
06 Jun 2019 | England 1-3 Netherlands | UEFA Nations League |
23 Mar 2018 | Netherlands 0-1 England | International Friendly |
29 Mar 2016 | England 1-2 Netherlands | International Friendly |
29 Feb 2012 | England 2-3 Netherlands | International Friendly |
12 Aug 2009 | Netherlands 2-2 England | International Friendly |
England hammered the Dutch 4-1 when the pair last met in a European Championship back in 1996. They have only met competitively once since then, though, this being during the inaugural season of the Nations League. The Three Lions fell to a defeat that day, but losing is not something they experience very often. Only twice in their last 19 matches (all opponents) has Southgate witnessed his side taste defeat.
Possible Lineups
- Netherlands (4-3-3): Verbruggen – Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Aké – Schouten, Simons, Reijnders – Malen, Depay, Gakpo
- England (3-4-2-1): Pickford – Walker, Stones, Guéhi – Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Shaw – Bellingham, Foden – Kane

This game will be aired live on NPO 1 in the Netherlands and on ITV1 (or STV in Scotland) in the United Kingdom.
Prediction
We do not expect this game to be decided within 90 minutes. Three of the four quarter-final matches needed extra time and/or penalties, as did both semi-finals of Euro 2020. The cagey nature of knockout football often makes draws more likely and Southgate’s safety-first approach will only add to it. As well as a regular-time draw, we will back England to win on penalties. Although not historically blessed at shootouts, they showed against Switzerland that they have some top-class takers.
