The winner of Hungary vs Switzerland will have a great chance of qualifying, although nothing is decided at this early stage.

Hungary and Switzerland last met in 2017, and the teams produced a seven-goal thriller. The Swiss enjoyed the home advantage for that game, and they made it count when easing to a fabulous 5-2 victory. The Hungarians were blown away that day but know they are capable of better. Hungary suffered a mixed bag of results in the build-up to Euro 2024. They impressed when stringing together a three-game winning streak, beating Montenegro, Turkey and Kosovo. Marco Rossi’s team scored six goals in that period while conceding just one, but they suffered a surprise defeat at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin earlier this month. Adam Lang scored for Hungary, but it wasn’t enough to match a determined and hard-working Ireland. Rossi knows his men must defend better in Cologne.

Hungary was last in action against Israel a few days ago when easing to a 3-0 victory. It was a comfortable outing for the Hungarians and the perfect warm-up. Goals from Sallai and a Varga double-sealed the deal. What’s interesting about that result was Hungary’s fast start, scoring three goals inside 22 minutes.

Switzerland Team News

The Swiss were in much better form on the approach to this summer’s football spectacle, enjoying an extended winning run. Team Switzerland took confidence from victories against Andorra, Ireland, and Estonia. A-Team also ended level with Belarus, Israel, and Denmark. Murat Yakin’s men will feel they are the favourites in their opening group game and know the value of claiming three points at the earliest opportunity.

The Swiss prepared for this opener with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Austria. They were expected to win the game, but they fell behind inside five minutes. Both goals in that game came in the first 26 minutes, suggesting a frantic start against Hungary, and that’s something to look out for in Germany.

Hungary vs Switzerland H2H Record and Key Numbers

The international football history books show the Hungarians and Swiss have met seven times previously since October 1995. Switzerland enjoys the lion’s share of wins on five from seven attempts, while Hungary enters on one win, with one game ending in a draw.

The most recent clash happened in October 2017, when Switzerland eased to an impressive 5-2 victory at St Jakob Park. It was a real demolition job, and that emphatic win means the Swiss have won their previous three meetings with the Hungarians, resulting in an aggregate score of 9-6. Fans hope to see another goal fest.

Prediction

What a game we have in store here as two teams with ambitions of playing knockout football cross paths early. The result could be influential in deciding which team will progress to the next round, but I fancy Switzerland’s chances.

The Swiss caught the eye in their recent friendlies and also boasted better results on the head-to-head sheet. If they are anywhere near their best, Switzerland will be good enough to continue their winning ways against the Hungarians. I hope for another entertaining game filled with plenty of goals, but give Switzerland the nod.
