The AFCON qualifiers delivered 23 teams to the finals. Those nations join the host side, Morocco, to form the 24-side tournament.

Who will host AFCON 2025?

Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Obviously, Morocco will hope for a good run. However, they have won AFCON just once, in 1976, although they made the final in 2004.

When is the final of AFCON 2025?

Despite the tournament being billed as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the final will take place on the 18th of January 2026. The showpiece will be held in the capital city, Rabat.

Who won the last AFCON?

AFCON 2023 (which confusingly took place entirely in 2024) was hosted and won by Ivory Coast. It was their third tournament success after they won it in 1992 and 2015.

How many AFCONs has South Africa won?

South Africa have won AFCON just once. They claimed the title in 1996 on home soil. However, they went close last time, losing in the semis to Nigeria on penalties.

Where to watch Africa Cup of Nations matches in South Africa?

AFCON 2025 Group Stage & Predictions

You can see the six AFCON groups below. Moreover, we have also included tips and predictions for which two teams will earn automatic qualification from each group.

Group A

  • Morocco
  • Mali
  • Zambia
  • Comoros

Morocco are the highest-ranked African nation in the FIFA standings. The Atlas Lions are currently ranked 11th, ahead of Italy, although that may not be a true reflection of reality. However, they should still prove far too strong on home soil and should top the group. Indeed, they are the favourites to win the whole tournament. Mali pushed Ivory Coast hard in the quarters in 2023 and the Eagles should join Morocco in progressing to the knockout stage.

Group B

  • Egypt
  • South Africa
  • Angola
  • Zimbabwe
Veselin Ignatov

Generally speaking, this is an easy one in our opinion. South Africa will battle it out with Egypt for top spot. If the real Mo Salah turns up, they will be hard to stop. However, if 2025/26 Salah comes to AFCON then Hugo Broos’ boys could do the business.

Group C

  • Nigeria
  • Tunisia
  • Uganda
  • Tanzania
Veselin Ignatov

On paper, Nigeria and Tunisia should prove far too strong and the former, in particular, will fancy their chances of going all the way. FIFA ranks the Super Eagles 38th in the world, and they have a number of global stars. However, both Uganda and Tanzania could cause an upset and pinch second place.

Group D

  • Senegal
  • DR Congo
  • Benin
  • Botswana
Veselin Ignatov

Senegal are the clear favourites to top the group and with fine players such as Iliman Ndiaye (of Everton), it is easy to see why. Indeed, they showed their class in June when they became the first African side to beat England at Wembley. DR Congo should finish second. They lost to South Africa in the third-place play-off at the last AFCON and are a solid side.

Group E

  • Algeria
  • Burkina Faso
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Sudan
Veselin Ignatov

As with all the groups, there is a clear top two. Obviously, in tournament soccer there are often upsets. However, we cannot see past Algeria and Burkina Faso here. The former are the fourth-best-ranked African side according to FIFA.

Group F

  • Ivory Coast
  • Cameroon
  • Gabon
  • Mozambique

The defending champions are in perhaps the toughest group in terms of overall strength. Ivory Coast and Cameroon are giants of football on the continent. However, Gabon will feel they might have what it takes to upset one of the two African heavyweights. Once again, though, we predict the group will go the way of the favourites.

AFCON 2025 Winner Prediction

Bookmakers make Morocco the favourites and home advantage is often crucial in AFCON. However, we feel the hosts are too short in the betting. Odds of just 3.65 (from betway) offer us little value. Senegal will have a great chance, while Nigeria could do well if their stars perform. However, our prediction is for Egypt to win.

The North Africans are the most successful side in AFCON history. Moreover, Salah will arrive fresh and with a point to prove. With him, Man City’s Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed (who plays for Nantes), the Pharaohs have the best front line at AFCON 2025. We predict Salah and co will score the goals to fire Egypt to glory at 6.85.

Betway odds for AFCON 2025 Winner:

  • Morocco @3.65
  • Egypt @6.85
  • Algeria @7.35
  • Senegal @7.35
  • Nigeria @10.50
  • Ivory Coast @13.70
  • Mali @13.80
  • Tunisia @13.80
  • Cameroon @18.00
  • South Africa @43.00

2025 Africa Cup of Nations Goalscorer Prediction

Obviously, if Egypt are to win, Salah will have to score plenty of goals. We think he will and so our top goalscorer prediction is easy. Back Mo at odds of 10.50.

Betway odds for AFCON 2025 Goalscorer:

  • Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) @10.50
  • Mohamed Salah (Egypt) @10.50
  • Ayoub El Kaabi (Morocco) @16.90
  • Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) @20.10
  • Brahim Diaz (Morocco) @23.30
  • Youssef En-Nesyri (Morocco) @23.30
  • Ademola Lookman (Nigeria) @23.30
  • Hamza Igamane (Morocco) @26.40
  • Nicolas Jackson (Senegal) @26.40
  • Sadio Mane (Senegal) @26.40

Nostrabet’s Prediction for South Africa’s Performance at AFCON

AFCON results are not always predictable but, as we’ve said, we think South Africa will qualify from Group B. They may face Cameroon in the round of 16, and then could play Morocco in the quarters. That might be the end of the road for Bafana Bafana. However, if they can get past the hosts, who knows how far they can go?
